Big Bertha - Rupp Arena 1976

Big Bertha, the huge center speaker cluster that served up audio to the 24,000 seat Rupp Arena, home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team for nearly 40 years.

Big Bertha consisted of 58 Altec Model 805 multicellular horns and 8 Altec model 210 low frequency horns.

She weighed in at 12,000-lb and was 20 feet tall and 22 feet at her widest point

The custom audio system was designed by Merrill Richardson, who still serves as the director of facilities administration at the Lexington Center.

Big Bertha was retired and dismantled in 2016 and replaced by a state of the art L-Acoustics K2 PA system from Cincinnati-based Loud & Clear Inc.

Big Bertha was sold at auction to Brad Mallory, a family physician and self-described “preserver” of audio equipment. Here’s a video of the last time Big Berta was lowered during a brief ceremony, where current and former Rupp Arena staff said their goodbyes to the sound system. The last song played over her 66 Altec horns was the theme music from 2001: A Space Odyssey, a nod to the past and the start of a new era.
