SHAVIJA Napisano pre 32 minuta #125 Napisano pre 32 minuta is tango np-126 good ot for 10y tube preamp August 10, 2026 No, the Tango NP-126 is not a good output transformer for a 10Y tube preamp. While the Tango NP-126 is an legendary, ultra-premium line transformer, it is physically and electrically mismatched for a high plate resistance (\(R_{p}\)) triode like the 10Y (VT-25). [1] The primary constraints making this combination a poor choice include: 1. Inadequate Primary Inductance at Low Frequencies The Math: The 10Y features a high internal plate resistance (\(R_{p}\)) of 5kΩ to 6kΩ. To achieve a flat low-frequency response down to 20Hz, your transformer primary needs an inductive reactance (\(X_{L}\)) at least 3 to 4 times the tube's \(R_{p}\). For a 10Y, you ideally need 80 to 100 Henries of primary inductance minimum under actual operating conditions. The Tango Reality: The Tango NP-126 datasheet specifications show a primary inductance of 110H when wired in its 20kΩ series configuration. While 110H sounds like enough on paper, that figure drops drastically under actual DC current load. [1] The Penalty: As inductance plummets with your standing bias current, the 10Y will lose its load line at low frequencies. This turns into an early bass roll-off and a massive spike in phase shift and low-frequency harmonic distortion (H2/H3), robbing the 10Y of its signature clean, tight authority. 2. Excessive DC Current Constraints The Math: A 10Y sounds best and achieves maximum linearity when biased relatively hot, typically around 15mA to 25mA of standing DC current. The Tango Reality: The maximum rated DC current for the Tango NP-126 in series mode (20kΩ) is only 20mA. [1] The Penalty: Running the transformer right at its 20mA redline leaves zero headroom. The core will magnetically saturate on bass transients, compressing your dynamics and dirtying up the lower midrange. If you back the 10Y current down to 10–12mA to protect the transformer core, the 10Y moves into a highly non-linear region of its curves, spiking higher-order distortion across the entire band. 3. Core Size Limitations The Weight: The NP-126 is a small line transformer weighing only 0.8 kg (1.7 lbs). It was engineered to handle lower-impedance, lower-current, or indirectly heated triodes (like a 6SN7, 76, or 56). The Penalty: High-impedance DHTs like the 10Y demand massive, heavily gapped iron cores to maintain high inductance while carrying significant DC current. Putting a 10Y on an 0.8 kg transformer severely bottlenecks the tube's energetic micro-dynamics and holographic soundstage. [1, 2, 3, 4] What Transformers Work Better for a 10Y? If you are determined to build a 10Y preamp, you should look for large-core output transformers explicitly engineered with a 10kΩ to 15kΩ primary rating and a high 30mA+ DC current capability. Excellent historical and modern matches include: Hashimoto HL-20K-6: Designed precisely for high-\(R_{p}\) line stages with robust inductance under load. Monolith Magnetics or Lundahl (e.g., LL1689 or LL2745 in appropriate configurations): These offer amorphous or silicon-iron cores sized appropriately to handle high-plate-resistance tubes without saturating. Show all You said: what can tango np-126 be used for in a 10y preamp what can be tango np-126 used for in a 10y preamp August 10, 2026 While you cannot use the Tango NP-126 as a conventional plate-load output transformer for a 10Y, you can still utilize it within a 10Y preamplifier circuit by changing its functional role. To use it safely and effectively, you must decouple the transformer from the high internal resistance (\(R_{p}\)) of the 10Y and isolate it from carrying the tube's heavy DC standing current. Here are the three best ways to integrate the Tango NP-126 into a 10Y preamp project: 1. Parafeed (Parallel Feed) Output Transformer This is the most popular and sonically superior way to use the NP-126 in a 10Y circuit. Instead of forcing the transformer to handle both the audio signal and the DC bias current, you split the duties. How it works: You load the 10Y plate with a high-inductance plate choke (e.g., 100H–150H rated for 30mA) or a solid-state Constant Current Source (CCS / Gyrator). You then connect the Tango NP-126 in parallel via a high-quality blocking capacitor (typically 1µF to 3.3µF). Why it works: Because the DC current is blocked by the capacitor, zero DC current flows through the NP-126. This prevents core saturation. Without DC current, the primary inductance of the NP-126 rockets up to its maximum potential. The Configuration: You can now safely wire the NP-126 in its 20kΩ series primary configuration. The 10Y sees a pure, flat, high-impedance AC load. This preserves the 10Y’s deep bass authority and liquid midrange while utilizing the legendary Tango core materials for the output stage. 2. Input Step-Up / Phase Splitter Transformer If you decide to use a dedicated, large-core output transformer for the 10Y, you can move the Tango NP-126 to the very front of the preamplifier circuit. How it works: Place the NP-126 before the grid of the 10Y tube to act as an input isolation and voltage step-up transformer. The Configuration: Feed your source component (DAC, Phono stage) into the 600Ω or 5kΩ parallel connections of the NP-126, and use the 20kΩ series connection to drive the grid of the 10Y. Why it works: This provides a clean, passive voltage gain (step-up ratio) before the tube stage. It also provides perfect galvanic isolation, breaks ground loops, and can cleanly convert a single-ended (RCA) input into a balanced signal if you want to run a balanced volume control. 3. Interstage Transformer (Push-Pull or Two-Stage Design) If your 10Y preamp is a more complex, multi-stage design, the NP-126 can serve as a premium coupling device between the first stage and the 10Y stage. How it works: You use a low plate-resistance, low-current driver tube for the first stage—such as a 76, 56, 6P5, or 6SN7 section—biased safely below 10mA–15mA. The Configuration: The NP-126 sits on the plate of this small driver tube, and its secondary outputs directly drive the grid of the 10Y tube. Why it works: Small signal tubes match the primary inductance profile of the NP-126 perfectly. The NP-126 then acts as a low-distortion buffer, driving the grid capacitance of the 10Y effortlessly while imparting the classic Tango sonic signature into the signal path. Summary of Implementation Roles Role Placement Primary Wiring Core Benefit Parafeed Output After 10Y Plate (Capacitor Coupled) 20kΩ Series Keeps DC off the Tango; maximizes bass extension. Input Step-Up Before 10Y Grid 600Ω or 5kΩ Input Provides passive gain, breaks ground loops. You said: mark levinson 27.5 , im using tango np-126 ot mark levinson 27.5 , im using tango np-126 ot 01:51 Given that you are driving the Mark Levinson 27.5 with its high 1.5nF input capacitance, using the Tango NP-126 in a Parafeed configuration is the only way to make a 10Y tube preamp work successfully in this system. By separating the DC current from the audio signal, you allow the Tango to maintain its maximum inductance, lowering output impedance enough to handle the Levinson's challenging input load. The Optimized 10Y Parafeed Design Blueprint To implement this safely and extract the absolute best sonic performance, your circuit must use the following configuration parameters: [10Y Plate] ───┬───────────────────┐ │ │ [Plate Choke / CCS] [Parafeed Cap: 2.2µF] │ │ (B+ Supply) [Tango NP-126 Primary] (20kΩ Series) │ (Ground) 1. The Plate Load (Choke or Solid-State CCS) The Component: You must load the 10Y plate with a dedicated, high-inductance Plate Choke (minimum 100H to 150H rated for 30mA DC) or a high-voltage Solid-State Constant Current Source (CCS / Gyrator). The Reason: This component handles 100% of the 10Y's standing DC bias current (ideally set around 15mA to 20mA for maximum linearity). It acts as a massive AC block, forcing all the musical signal to flow through the parafeed capacitor instead. 2. The Parafeed Blocking Capacitor The Component: A premium 1.5µF to 2.2µF film capacitor (such as a metalized polypropylene or oil-filled capacitor) rated for at least 450V–600V. The Reason: This capacitor blocks the high DC voltage (B+) from reaching your Tango NP-126, protecting the transformer while passing the AC audio signal perfectly. 3. The Tango NP-126 Wiring Configuration Primary Side: Wire the primaries in Series (20kΩ configuration). Because there is zero DC current saturation, the transformer will deliver its maximum specified 110H of inductance. This creates an ideal, ultra-linear load line for the 10Y, eliminating the low-frequency H2/H3 bass distortion that would normally ruin a direct-dc design. Secondary Side (Output): Wire the secondaries in Parallel (600Ω configuration). This yields a massive 5.7:1 step-down ratio. Driving the Levinson: Stepping down the 20kΩ primary to a 600Ω secondary drops the output impedance (\(Z_{out}\)) of your preamplifier down to roughly 150Ω to 200Ω. An output impedance this low will effortlessly drive the Mark Levinson 27.5's heavy 1.5nF input capacitance without rolling off the top end or causing high-frequency phase shift. Expected Sonic Outcome Implementing a 10Y in parafeed into the Tango NP-126 brings out the absolute best traits of both pieces of hardware: The Bass: Tight, punchy, and deeply extended. The Levinson's solid-state grip is preserved because the preamp's low-end phase behavior is perfectly flat. The Midrange: You retain the legendary, pure H2 dominance of the 10Y, throwing a vast, holographically layered soundstage with lifelike vocal textures. The Treble: Sweet, highly extended, and free of glare, because the low output impedance cleanly slices right through the amplifier's input capacitance. [1]
