Conjure: Music for the Texts of Ishmael Reed. 1985.
Essentially the brainchild of Kip Hanrahan, the loose-knit group known as Conjure brings to bear all the elements that he had fused so successfully in the various projects released under his own name: avant-garde jazz, Latin (especially Afro-Cuban) rhythms, and a deep, funky blues sensibility. Here, using texts from the contemporary author Ishmael Reed, he distributes the composing duties to everyone from Lester Bowie to Taj Mahal to Allen Toussaint, mixes a heady instrumental gumbo, and allows things to percolate to a fine boil. The cast of musicians is certainly of all-star quality, but special mention should be made of trumpeter Olu Dara for some heart-rendingly beautiful playing, Taj Mahal for his wonderful, raspy vocal delivery, and the entire cast of percussionists, astounding in their diversity of attacks... Saxman Lonnie Youngblood scored several R&B hits while recording steadily over the '60s and '70s, but is probably best remembered for hiring a young Jimi Hendrix and thus giving him the chance to play on one of his first professional sessions. Hendrix left Youngblood's band in early 1964, but the two remained friends up until Hendrix's death in 1970.
Youngblood really hit his stride in the '70s, when he recorded funkier workouts for the Turbo label. He scored his biggest hit in 1972 with the grooving instrumental "Sweet Sweet Tootie," which climbed into the R&B Top 40; the accompanying LP of the same name also featured other single sides like "Super Cool" and "Black Is So Bad"... Eddie Bo, The Hook and Sling, 1969.
Primarily heavy funk instrumentals, with plenty of wah wah guitars and drum breaks, there are connections to Bo's musical past, including "Love Has Been Good" and "Come to Me"," two blues-based ballads that lean hard on Bo's piano. Despite the contrasting styles, Hook & Sling's material is impressively strong throughout, including good advice on love ("Check Your Bucket" and dance crazes "The Thang"). This is a life-changing release from the vaults... Allmusic
