The Road to Escondido turns 15!
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the release of JJ Cale and Eric Clapton's collaborative Grammy-winning, Gold record, The Road To Escondido. Eric Clapton noted that he had long been trying to capture the production sound and nature of JJ Cale’s releases on his own recordings, without success. At Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004 (where Eric performed on JJ Cale's entire set with him), Eric told Cale about his intention to capture Cale's recording sound and told him that perhaps the only way he could get that sound would be if Cale produced his next record. Given Eric's huge audience, Cale was wary about taking on the responsibility for the sound of Eric's next record so he didn't immediately agree to do the project and considered the offer for a while. While Cale ended up accepting Eric's invitation, as the project moved forward, it became more of a co-production between the two artists. Cale also participated on the artist side as well, contributing guitar and vocals throughout the project, in addition to the fact that 11 out of 14 of the songs were Cale's compositions. Many songs by different artists had been suggested at the outset of planning for the record but Eric really wanted to use mainly JJ Cale songs. It was only after the album was "completed" that Eric suggested perhaps if Cale added a few more vocals and guitar on several of the songs, the plan could be revised to be released as more of a collaborative project than the original plan for it to be Eric's new record. In a somewhat surprising twist for Cale, who usually preferred staying in the background, he agreed, made the suggested additions to include more of his guitar and vocals and Eric then generously put Cale’s name first on the record.
Listen here to "When This War Is Over" – a JJ Cale song with a straightforward message that touches on the unfortunately never-ending casualties of so many wars.
